Bright Light, Desert City

This is a webcomic about my stay in Tucson and San Francisco.

In 2022 I visited the Tucson and Bay Area region, just before the midterm elections. Bright Light, Desert City tells the story of the everyday lives of people living in the (South)west of the United States of America, covering issues like, homelessness, gun culture, LGBT rights and politics.

The U.S.A. has always had a sizeable influence on my drawings. My uncle emigrated to the States in the 1950s, along with many other Dutch people. They went looking for a better future after World War II. When I was little, the U.S. was presented as a promised land, a country where hard work ensured a prosperous life. Through the years, my view on America changed, but I remain interested in its culture, closely following current events and politics, which is becoming quite the spectacle recently.
